SICKONES release AGILITY with full band w/ new singer Kristie Easterbrook and bassist, George Walker

Since formation in 2016, SickOnes have established solid ground in the UK Punk Scene, touring alongside the likes of The Dead Kennedys and Cancer Bats and garnering positive reviews from outlets such as Dead Press, Down For Life Magazine and BBC Radio stations. The band has brought stages to life with their exciting and unpredictable performances during their career, although at the end of 2018, parted ways with their former frontman, Ben. Since then, SickOnes have introduced their latest singer, Kristie Easterbrook with their previous releases, Candid, The Step and Exit Years last year. With this second phase of production, SickOnes saw the introduction of bassist George Walker, furthering the band in creative development and energising them for their latest release, Agility.

Combative distortion opens Agility like a rumble of thunder. With heavy influence from bands such as Beastie Boys and Cancer Bats, Agility grounds itself in the hardcore punk scene with such a tumultuous attitude. It’s a loud track, hitting harder than your first morning coffee and toys with melodic riffs to tie it together throughout. SickOnes are a powerhouse of sound, a force to be reckoned with within the scene, and Agility is an exciting release at the start of 2020, with a plethora of opportunities at their fingertips.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR – ADOLESCENCE out FRIDAY 26TH

Since the release of their last EP Count Yourself Lucky, Leeds based pop punk band, This Time Last Year have been busy creating instalments for their discography such as 2018’s ‘Where Did The Time Go?’ and ‘Just Talk,’ and now, coming this Friday is their latest collection of tracks for upcoming EP, Adolescence. Featuring their latest released track, ‘Limbo,’ the EP was recorded and mixed by Oskar Sutton, a producer known for his work with bands such as Asleep At The Helm and Solarshift at the studio in Manchester.

Adolescence sees the progress that This Time Last Year has made since their initial release, creating distinctive elements of melodic riffs atop bouncing bass. Chord changes dictate the fluctuation of emotion, driven by infectious lyrics to emphasise. If there’s one thing This Time Last Year has truly mastered during their time as a band, is the ability to grab attention – and keep it. ‘Better Off Alone’ toys with heavier elements, powerful in tones tied with intensity as we see harmonised chorus’s, pitch changes and a bridge full of behemothic properties. It’s the connection of playful pop punk characteristics weaved with a substantial amount of angst reminiscent of mid 90’s punk rock. Lyrically, the track feels privatised, displaying a sense of vulnerability behind walls, correlating with a combative tone that truly brings an emphasis to the overall authenticity of the song.

‘These Days’ features a variety of talent seen in high-energy instrumentals, displayed with rapid drumming techniques and calculated picking. It’s a track filled with atmosphere, plucking at creative heartstrings as it moves through its structure. Much like the previous, we hear aspects of a heavier nature burst through in a deepened tone and tremendous drums. Throughout ‘These Days,’ each instrument has its fair share of spotlight, building and proving their vitality to the overall track.

This Time Last Year has built a foundation for themselves, with Adolescence offering a more formative established sound. Holding onto pivotal components from Count Yourself Lucky that brought This Time Last Year onto the scene, their progression since 2017 is sizeable with distinct talent for energetic tracks touching upon emotion.

Adolescence is due for release this Friday, the 26th of July and will be available across streaming platforms.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR release new track & video ‘LIMBO’

Leeds quartet, This Time Last Year have released their latest track Limbo, along with a music video.

The track features melodic riffs accompanied by hard hitting drums and a deep bass. Known for their anthemic style of writing, creating infectious music, Limbo delivers in all areas. It encompasses the true nature of This Time Last Year, including their unparalleled style of lyrical writing and calculated instrumentals. Since their release of Just Talk and Maple last year, Limbo emphasizes their established sound and talent, with clear production that even the slight guitar note changes brings their own intensity.

Accompanied with a music video that magnifies the guys’ passion for their music, it brings along an added tug of emotion. Taking place in a living room, switching through scenes of separate instruments, it portrays imagery of time moving as well as the effects of an overactive mind.

Limbo is now available on all streaming services including Spotify and Apple Music.

LAKE SYCAMORE release LOATHE ahead of Swansea and Cardiff shows

Cardiff based pop punk outfit, Lake Sycamore has released their latest addition to their discography, ‘Loathe’ that’s currently available on YouTube and soon to be across various streaming platforms. Since their appearance in London’s The Slaughtered Lamb, Lake Sycamore has been building anticipation for upcoming material, with the band releasing an update earlier this year displaying plans for an upcoming album alongside a 30 second teaser for ‘Loathe,” that was due for release in June. Thankfully for us, Lake Sycamore put that long wait to one side and has released the track for early listening prior to forthcoming gigs in Swansea’s The Bunkhouse and Cardiff’s Fuel Rock Club.

Featuring a melodic structure in tone, ‘Loathe’ sees Lake Sycamore contouring a canorous rhythm of guitar around a cadenced percussion, impressively tying together in a complemented ricochet. The distortion of instruments adorns the raucous vocals and magnifies the lyrical intensity, sealed together in a buoyant demonstration of apparatus. ‘Loathe’ conceives an impression of nostalgia, ostensible of influences such as TSSF and Four Year Strong, weaving through a plethora of individual seductions to manipulate the collective of the current pop punk.

[REVIEW] Trophy Jump – haphazard, MARCH 29TH

Croatian quintet, Trophy Jump, are about to release their upcoming EP, haphazard on March 29th that’s teasing an overall nostalgic vibe, toying with convivial senses. Growing as a band since formation in 2014, haphazard displays a combination of wistful tones characterised by their influences such as Rancid and NOFX in a contemporary mannerisms of the current punk rock scene.

Kicking off the album with Comfort Zone, the perky and light melodic nature is captivating, lyrically infectious and heavy on the bass. The short run-time of the track is teasing, leaving more to be desired, but quickly moving into the next track, Not That Kind Of Guy. The most appealing aspect of Trophy Jump’s haphazard is it’s lively chords, complimented by a sturdy, bouncy bass line that steals the spotlight. It’s a well-rounded installment for Trophy Jump, offering upbeat and nearly nostalgic tones representative of when the scene exploded on social media back in 2009. Chicago Kid, one of two of the longer running tracks of the EP, is by far a favourite. Experimenting with melodies and harmonies, it moves in linear motion with fluidity and providing more insight to the chemistry and talents of each instrument. It really does give the EP more depth, playing with different resonances in well-constructed verses. Taking this progression into the next track, Trophy Jump feels like an entirely different composition by the time you read the end of the EP, establishing themselves in their sound and dominating their talents. Remete Hills ends their installment, verifying their dynamic configuration.

[REVIEW] Colt 48 – Negatives EP

London hard Rock duo, Colt 48 are gearing up for the release of their EP, Negatives this month. Due out on March 29th, the duo released Disconnected last month that has gained a lot of high praise for it’s well structured brilliance, encapsulating hard rock vibes sprinkled with a nostalgic early noughties nu-metal undertones. In anticipation of the release, their EP launch party takes place this week on the 15th to a sold-out crowd at London’s The Hope and Anchor.

With Disconnected already in the spotlight, the 5 track EP was created alongside Colin Richardson, and produced by Chris Clancy, both armored with impressive portfolios including names such as Slipknot, Machine Head, Mutiny Within and Wearing Scars. Discussing the EP, vocalist and guitarist Adam Jerome says “Negatives i s the work we’re most proud of to date.”

Lyrically incorporating personal dealings, Negatives explore their metal influences alongside their previous heavy riffs and stentorian beats. Opening with previously released Disconnected, Negatives has a lot on offer as it moves into its second track, Scapegoat. Instrumentally fused together by distortion, the sound of ricocheting drums takes the center stage as it motions the tracks in fluid movements, changing the overall temperament with ease. Out Of Habit displays it’s huge bass and lyrical mastery on a pedestal, carrying it into The Fire and expanding upon its influence by creating a monumental breakdown. The five track EP holds onto its metal influences throughout, conjuring a plethora of expansions blossoming in originality.

Negatives is due for release on March 29th, currently followed by two shows in Leeds supporting Stand Alone and Black Orchid Empire, and in London supporting Glamour Of The Kill as well as Camden Rocks Festival this June.

[REVIEW] HAPPY. – Cult Classic by Pauline Campbell

Happy., are a pop punk band from Columbia, South Carolina, who are aptly named regarding the vision they choose to portray with their music. At times, their work is bright and cheerful, akin to a Saturday afternoon in the summer; but there are points where the band touches on contrasting low points, which is reflected in the blunt period within their band name. A few weeks ago, they released their debut full length, Cult Classic.

How To Lose A Girl in 1:45 staples the tone for the rest of the record, starting with bright slowly paced luau music produced to sound as if it’s being broadcast on an old radio, and from there switching to a sound that is reminiscent of early Blink 182 if they were fronted by Charlie Simpson. A facet of this record that I enjoyed the most was the way that Happy. cohesively meshed together elements that if done by a less creatively articulate band, wouldn’t have worked. The lyrical content of Winona Ryder, with lyrics such as “Darkest of dens/Is where we will fit in/Don’t underestimate my capability/To be your favourite sin”, is deliciously reflected in the tasteful use of the bass guitar throughout the song. This is mixed in with a surf punk Agent Orange type sound, which gives the song a unique and agreeable character. Also, there’s a guitar solo in Drowners, that again should not work, but for some reason it does.

Don’t Overdose and Drive is pretty safe in sound compared to the rest of the album but is otherwise palatable and cohesive. The chorus has a certain snappy feel to it that I would place with faster songs in the genre, which is delightful to hear, and truly showcases the band’s promising composition skills. There are however, some low points on the record in terms of songwriting. I Call Shotgun is not the band’s finest minute; I felt the whole track was a little juvenile and dated. The vocal melodies lacked assertiveness, which I also noticed in Fishtank, and the dynamics between sections could have been better developed. Happy. have proved that they are more than capable of writing fitting vocal melodies, as seen in Drowners, and they do have a good grasp on dynamics in Where The Wild Things Are, which I feel is the strongest song on the record. Where The Wild Things Are is the track that made me interested in reviewing this album; the chorus is catchy and dark, with the perfect amount of grit for the band’s style. I am almost offended on the song’s behalf that it was placed last on the record.

For a band that is relatively new, Happy. have proved themselves to be worthy of their contemporaries. By combining contrasting styles and moods, Cult Classic stands as a striking debut album, that has a distinctive and enjoyable individuality not often seen in the initial efforts of most bands of the genre.
